When he is not lecturing or authoring highly-respected financial books, John R. Nofsinger enjoys traveling. He has previously visited several countries in Asia, including Laos.
While Laos is lesser known than its neighbors such as Thailand and Vietnam, the Southeast Asian country has a lot to offer to an adventurous traveler. Some of the most popular destinations include:
1. Luang Prabang - the ancient capital city has centuries-old temples alongside French-colonial era architecture. Visitors are also drawn to the Luang Prabang’s natural wonders, which include the 50-meter high Kuang Si waterfall and the Elephant Village Sanctuary.
2. Vat Phou - this mountain temple has stood along the Mekong River since the fifth century. While the UNESCO site is a Buddhist temple, its buildings feature statues of Hindu deities.
3. Vieng Xai Caves - During the Laos civil war, more than 200 caves in the northern city of Vieng Xai served as a shelter to protect members of the Pathet Lao communist party from aerial bombings. Today, visitors can book an educational tour and learn about the lives of the more than 20,000 people who survived in the caves for nearly a decade.
